Long Lake does not hibernate. The same lake that draws anglers and boaters all summer becomes a winter playground when it freezes — and the surrounding Washburn County trails turn into some of the best snowmobiling and skiing country in the Midwest. Pack the long underwear and come see why locals love the quiet season.
Ice fishing
Hard-water season is prime time on Long Lake. Anglers chase walleye in six to fifteen feet of water, jig up crappie, bluegill and perch, and set tip-ups for the lake's trophy northern pike along the weedbeds — historically north of Kunz Island and in Gruenhagen Bay. Just remember that musky may not be targeted through the ice. See our full ice fishing guide for tactics and safety, and always check ice conditions before heading out.
Snowmobiling
Washburn County is snowmobile country, with miles of groomed trails connecting lakes, towns and Northwoods scenery. The region links into long-distance routes including the Wild Rivers State Trail, which runs roughly ninety-six miles connecting Rice Lake to Solon Springs, and the Tuscobia State Trail, about seventy-four miles from near Birchwood to Park Falls. Ride right from many lakeside lodgings and fuel up along the way.
Skiing & snowshoeing
For a quieter pace, the area offers excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Nearby Hunt Hill, a roughly 600-acre nature preserve in Sarona, is a beautiful place to explore snowy trails on skis or snowshoes, with peaceful forest and bog scenery and winter birdlife. It is the perfect way to spend a crisp, sunny winter morning.
Stay warm, stay close: our lakefront cabins are open all season — ideal for an ice-fishing or sledding weekend — with a hot meal waiting at The Landing.
